The fact that Hemingway shows solicitude for death throughout his life reveals the writer's great concern for man, society and history. Therefore the study of the death theme shown in Hemingway's writings will naturally make us go further into a good understanding of his thought and creation. The paper discusses it in the following:(1) Based on some meaningful materials such as Nick's findings in a prayer at the age often the paper argues that Hemingway's idea about death experiences the stages from the philosophical cognition to social criticism, in the light of which the paper corrects several misunderstandings in the study.(2) Hemingway's creation implies his ontological philosophical cognition about death, which is formed in his long study of and personal embodiment of death. Hemingway holds that death would be the dialectical identity of possibility and fact. His story about Nick proves his seeking for eternity.(3) The paper points up an argument with facts that Hemingway's terror of death is not in contradiction with his courage. It is the fear of death that encourages Hemingway to make probes into the value of life, which brings him a lofty ideal to face the cruel scuffles in life, and gives him a power to criticize the society.(4) The paper discusses the aesthetic connotation of the death theme. In Hemingway's writings there are two categories of figures related with death: one is ugly and the other is full of aestheticism.
