| When we come to Ernest Hemingway, we will naturally think of many of his works, such as The Old Man and the Sea, A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises and so on. Why can Hemingway's works leave such a long and lasting impression on people's mind? Besides the fact that Hemingway's works kind of relate themselves with the society, which is the so-called"lost generation", the most important reason, in my opinion, lies in the death plotting and death description beneath Hemingway's works. Such questions will spring into your mind when you are reading some of Hemingway's works: What other meaning does the death plotting in Hemingway's works convey? What can we learn from these different kinds of death plotting or description? To the future writing or reading, what can be learnt from this way of writing? All these questions are well worth answering, so this thesis aims at solving all these problems and creating something new through some methods of research. In order to answer these questions, in Chapter One we will first go through the life of the writer and his writing background of the society in order to study his personal experience and how it affects his writing and how life experience is reflected in his works. Later in Chapter Two we simply introduce his works and themes and classify his writings in order to do some research later. In Chapter Three, we will go into the details of each book containing death plotting, and let our reader know how the death plotting is arranged into his writings. Next chapter, Chapter Four, means to give a full and comprehensive discussion and analysis on the reasons for such setting of death plotting, which is intended to convince readers that such a setting is not at all incidental, but intentional. During the discussion and analysis we will surely know that Hemingway in fact is using death as a writing technique to promote his writings and to impress his readers. Chapter Five is the conclusion after such a long discussion and analysis. So in this thesis, a research on the death of both Hemingway himself and his works is to be done thoroughly and from a new angle. We will combine his background and his personality and his works to do some research into him and his"death"symbolism. |
