A Study On Chinese Translation Of Journalistic English

With the further development in depth of reform and opening-up, China has more and more contacts with the outside world. There is the need for China to know more about the rest of the world and for others to understand China better. For both purposes, a large amount of information must be transmitted by news media, such as newspapers, radio, TV and Internet, the most important of which is newspapers, especially English newspapers.The way through which people with different languages communicate with each other is translation. It is a device of communication on politics, economy, cultures and ideas among different nations and countries. The communication on these aspects is a continuum that runs through the human history, social development and cultural spread. The previous study on Chinese translation of journalistic English emphasizes on the techniques, but the translation theories concerned are seldom mentioned. This thesis aims at the combination of theory with practice for developing the effective ways of Chinese translation of journalistic English.This thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the stylistic features of journalistic English. The clearest features of journalistic English are its special vocabulary and syntax. Headline is the essential part of news reporting. As few people have enough time to read the news from beginning to end, most readers try to learn as much information as they can in the shortest possible time. Thus the headline plays a peculiar role in newsreporting. Generally speaking, terseness, being eye-catching, compactness and humor characterize the good headline of a piece of news. The features of headlines are introduced from three aspects, including the lexical, grammatical and rhetorical features.The second chapter is the main body of the whole thesis. It introduces the nature, criteria and methods of the Chinese translation of journalistic English. News reporting is the report of the truth, so the translation should be loyal to the original; meanwhile, in order to appeal to the readership, the translation, especially the translation of headlines, should have, to some extent, the artistic quality. So the translation of news reporting is the unity of science, skill and art. In the translation of news reporting, the first criterion is exactness and completeness. The second is that the translation should be in harmony with the style of Chinese news. After all, the readers are mostly Chinese. The translation theorist Peter Newmark stresses that the methods of semantic translation and communicative translation are closely connected with each other. In translation, it is not possible for a translator to apply only one translation method, so it is not easy to tell which is the better method for a particular text. Actually, all translation must be, to some extent, both communicative and semantic. The matter of difference is only the different emphasis in a particular text. Then the following is the practical analysis of the translation of journalistic English from three aspects: translation of journalistic words, translation of sentences and translation of texts. The common mistakes in the translation of journalisticwords are also illustrated.The third chapter is the last chapter that mainly introduces the qualifications of the journalistic English translators and the special difficulties of the translation of journalistic English compared with the translation of other kinds of styles. The qualification that the translator should have the intercultural consciousness is emphasized in this part.The Chinese translation of journalistic English plays a very important role in the politics and economy of our country as well as in our daily work and life, for it can bring us a great deal of latest information of the world, including every field of life.All in all, the translation of journalistic English still has a long way to go.
