Aspects Of Journalistic English Translation

With the further development in depth of reform and opening-up, China has more and more contact with the outside world. There is the need for China to know more about the rest of the world and for others to better understand China. For both purposes, large amounts of information must be transmitted through news media. The present thesis, in the light of translatology, linguistics and stylistics, is to analyze the features of journalistic English, so as to generalize some criteria and techniques. The thesis is divided into five chapters.Chapter One touches upon the general aspects of journalistic English. The author discusses news value, language features and the structure of English news. This part makes preparations for the following parts.Chapter Two mainly deals with the criteria of Journalistic English Translation. To make the criteria clear, we should firstly know about the factors that influence Journalistic English Translation. On this basis this chapter explores the application of Newmark's "communicative translation" and "semantic translation" theory in the translation of journalistic English. The accurate conveyance of the original meaning is stressed.Chapter Three explores the lexical features of journalistic English and the translation of words. In this chapter, the author discusses the following aspects: Midget words, Neologisms, Borrowing and so on. Midget words are simple, short and familiar ones that dominate English news. News reporters or writers tend to prefer short words. Shorter words have the function of making headlines more effectively and forcefully, besides, they can also save space when necessary. Neologism or Vogue words are frequently adopted or coined by journalists to increase the sense of freshness. The present thesis explains the source of neologism, and tries to analyze it. Some skills of translating neologism are briefly introduced.
