Yan Zhitui's Linguistics Research

Weijlnnanbei dynasty is a very important period in Chinese ancient linguistics . Because it's in the end of shanggu linguistics and the start of zhonggu linguistics . Yan Zhitui was a very important scholar of this period . he had more wide knowledge and more deeply thoughts than others in this period . His thoeries and practices about linguistics represented the level of this period .Yan Zhitui had original views in all the area of textual criticism , philology , phonology , critical interpretation of texts and Chinese standardization .The study of Van's linguistics before usually concentrated on his phonology , not his whole linguistic thoeries .Therefore , to study Yan Zhitui's whole linguistics is necessary and significant very much .Like other Chinese linguistists ,Yart Zhitui had no special works on linguistic theory . His linguistic theories and practices lay in his writings , especially in his educational works Yan shi jia xun .To study Yan Zhitui's linguistics , I will study all his works present, sometimes , I'll explore it under the guidance of mordern linguistic thoeries . I wish I can disclose the whole appearance of Yan Zhitui's lingustics .This thesis includes three parts : Part one : Introduction . Introduce Yan Zhitui's achievement of linguistics and the reasons of the achievement. Part two : The thoeries and practices of Yan's linguistics , including his thoeries and practices of textual criticism , philology , phonology , critical interpretation of texts and Chinese standardization . Part three : The important value of studying Yan Zhitui's linguistics .Through studying and arranging Yan Zhitui's linguistics , we found the linguistic thoeries and practices of Yan Zhitui had surpassed the predecessor's in many aspects , especially in the following parts :Firstly , Yan Zhitui was the first linguistist who wholly wrote out the Chinese phonology history in concise language . He took part in the discussion of the first Chinese phonology book Qie yun and became the chief plotter of this book. This made phonology become mature and become one of the main stream of Chinese linguistics in latter 1000 year .Secondly , Yan Zhitui initiated a new way in the textual criticism . He discussed the mistakes in all kinds of ancient books while not one book as former linguistics did . Some of Yan's methods of textual criticism were used in textual research by textual reseacher of Qing dynasty and some were even used in today's ancient books arranging.Thirdly , Yan's discussion of script's standard form and common form resovled the problem of using the standard form or the common form . Yan's methods of script standardization is still meaningful in today's graphetic standardization .All in all , Yan Zhitui's linguistic methods is comprehensive and profound , while it has no systematization . To do a systematic reseach on Yan's linguistics is necessary to Chinese language history and Chinese linguistic history.
