To be "other" or "self, it's the two opposing extremes for the self-location of Chinese traditional music. Ancient Chinese musical theories have shown the hesitation of the choice, and moreover, at the high level, shown the cultural and ideological content. So, we can say that the location of the music shown from ancient Chinese musical theories is the special interpretation of the confliction of ancient Chinese culture and ideology. From "other" to "self, ancient China music have brought about a great leap, and it was a same progress as the emergence of the "ego" idea of the China traditional aesthetics. It can be divided into four major periods: (1) From the primitive period to the Confucian: the religion-wizard property of the Chinese traditional music; (2) Spring and Autumn and warring StatesPeriod--a debating period between various schools: the Confucian school'spolitical and ethics musical theory; the Taoist school natural musical theory and the Mohist school's "anti-music" theory. (3) From Qin Dynasty to Han Dynasty: the music-in -exile and comply more deeply with politics and ethics. (4) From Wei and Jin Dynasty to Southern Dynasties and Northern Dynasties: to be "self. It lights us to think about such several questions: the "elegant music" and the "vulgar music"; music and the "nature"; the contradiction between musical ego and the decline of its status and so on.
