The Chinese traditional music refers to the music that possess national inherent characteristics,created with inherent methods and forms by Chinese people , which includes not only the popular ancient works, but also contemporary works. The Chinese traditional music is profound for its rich content, long standing spread, special style and meaningful enchantment. However, as one of three largest worldwide music systems, Chinese music fails to keep up the pace of European music in the view of theory instruction, let along the educational practice. The tradition is the root of a nation and the anchor on which a nation exists and develops. Obviously, the music system of Europe is a developed and well-organized system and has its unique practice and aesthetical standard. However, if we consider the European standard and evaluation as ours, it is a kind of humiliation to our traditional music which owns thousands of year's history. The education of Chinese traditional music should be an essential part of contemporary music education system and be the key step to reserve and develop the tradition.By expounding such issues as the connotation, the denotation and styles of the concept of traditional music, as well as the courses, content, methods and conception of traditional music involving in music education in colleges, this treatise analyzes the living condition of Chinese traditional music and the various reasons why it loses the right of speech and it is marginalized in higher music education in the light of the survey on the current situation of traditional music education in colleges . Moreover, on the base of analyzing the structure, the system and the courses of the music education at universities, it preliminarily provides the ways to apply the teaching of traditional music in modern music education according to the basic characteristics and cultural meaning of Chinese traditional music.Finally, this treatise files the connotation and denotation of the concept of traditional music with a comprehension research, compares the different definitions and categories provided by some scholars, and diagnoses the content, the styles, the history, the forms , the position and the methods of Chinese traditional music education in colleges today (the main survey is in the colleges of Gansu that have the music major), which presents the theoretical foundation for the ways to construct the position of Chinese traditional music in modern music education in college.
