The Rural Reconstruction Movement that took place from 1920's to 1930's, was caused by the unprecedented decline in Chinese countryside at the beginning of Chinese modernization. The arising of the Rural Reconstruction Movement at the historic moment and the modern accomplishment of the figures in it gave the character of modernization to the movement self-evidently. But in the main field of vision of the traditional historians, "The Rural Reconstruction" has been always looked as the negative side of modernization and the synonym of conservatism. This thesis means to analyze its connotions of modernization objectively with the aid of the theories of modernization so as to restore its original features. In addition, the thesis will reveal the significance that "The Rural Reconstruction" looked for another way of modernization, so that it can provide some helps to today' s problems of "countryside, peasants and agriculture" even to the cause of Chinese characteristic modernization. The thesis contains three parts. The first part analyzes the background of the arising of the Rural Reconstruction in the Period of the Republic of China. There are two reasons from the aspects of subject and object. One is that both "the discovery of society" and "the decline of rural economy" were products of modernization. The other is that "The Rural Reconstruction" was the reaction to the process of Chinese modernization in the background of it.The second part discusses the modernizational connotions of "The Rural Reconstruction", and reveals the significance and value of initating another way of modernization by comparing it with The KSSP in India. The third part seeks the possibility to talk with "The Rural Reconstruction* initated half a century ago, especially the significance of the Rural Recontruction Figures' action and the possibility of manipulation to meet the problems of "countryside, peasants and agriculture" in today' s China.
