As a prominent scholar at the end of the Ming and the early Qing period, LüLiu-liang made great contributions to the study of both history and philosophy. His remarkable monograph and commentary works involve in-depth with the studies of the Six Confucian Classics, historical books, ancient poses, medicine, divination, Taoism, and Buddhism. However, his academic thoughts so far have not received much interest of research. Based on LüLiu-liang's Commentaries to The Great Learning, this thesis analyses Lü's academic advocates and at the same time revalues their position in the early Qing academic world. The thesis firstly reviews the relevant studies on The Great Learning, on which LüLiu-liang's comments are focused. Then it approaches Lü's views of The Great Learning which show a profound respect to Zhu Xi and a dismissal of Wang Yang-ming School from five perspect: (1) The Great Learning is a teaching book for the people with guality of sage; (2) On"stopping in perfect goodness"; (3)"investigation of things"argumentation; (4) Discussion about"the nature of human mind which is neither good nor evil"; (5) Commenting on"achieving internal conscienceness". Through the comparison of Lü's views with The Great learning with that of Zhu and Wang's, the thesis reports that the fundamental connotation of Lü's views on The Great Learning, that is ,to reach the goal of"Appreciating Zhu"by elucidating Zhu's views and refuting Wang's views and the opinions made by the contemporary scholars on The Great Learning. In addition, this thesis points out that Lü's understandings of Zhu and Wang's views on The Great Learning are partly wrong, which makes his"Praising Zhu and Dismissing Wang"view sort of absolute. In the last part of this study, by comparing Lü's analysis on The Great Learning with that of Gu Xian-cheng's, this thesis suggests that Lü's thoughts which show great influence from Dong-lin School, had affected many scholars in early Qing, which fostered the reappraisal of Zhu Xi's doctrines.
