This thesis first explains the similarities and correspondence between the ideological subject and existentialism philosophy in Shen Congwen's works. By means of metropolitan young girls' analysis of selection of love & marriage, the thesis holds that this is Shen Congwen's exploration of reasonable principles of existence of an individual and that Shen Congwen's ideas of these issues have gone beyond the pure idealized understanding of personality and self in individualism and romanticism in modern times, hence more close to modern existentialism.(â…¢) Plight of life and absurdity of existence. This part analyzes the life plight and absurdity of existence in the social changes of modern times facing the sons' in the old village in Xiangxi autonomous prefecture, together with their respective selections of life when faced with absurdity.(â…£) Wretchedness of life and concern for existence. This part analyzes the "wretchedness" of life embodied in Shen Congwen's works with Xiangxi as the subjects and holds that this is the worry and anxiety over human fate, especially the fatesof the minority nationalities in Xiangxi autonomous prefecture. This agrees with but is different from Haidegeer's judgment that "existence here" is "concern". Besides, it is close to Sata's viewpoint that "existentialism is humanitarianism".(â…¤) Examination of existence and seeking of self. This part analyzes Shen Congwen's works in the 40s in Kunming, Yuna, in which he not only criticized the losing of humanity, but examined on existence. He attempted to restore humanity, sought after real self and designed a way to return to self and humanity in pure spiritual field and in the world of beauty and arts. This makes Shen Congwen become a "non-fungible example" of human image in the 40s.(â…¥) Loneliness of existence and revolt against despair. This part analyzes Shen Congwen's loneliness of existence and despair in the "lunacy" period. The thesis not only analyzes external causes for this "lunacy", but penetrates Shen Congwen's inner world, and holds that this is the representation of the spirit of "revolt against despair".Finally, the thesis points out the importance of the analysis of existentialism experience in Shen Congwen's works.
