Research On Jin Yuelin’s Correspondence Theory Of Truth

The correspondence theory of truth is the most basic theory of truth whose history is oldest. Toanalyze the correspondence theory of truth, we must figure out what are truth-bearers, truth-makers, and themeaning of correspondence. Jin Yuelin’s correspondence theory of truth, on the one hand, his theory oftruth will be analyzed from those three aspects then. On the other hand, this dissertation discusses JinYuelin’s theories of definition of the truth and the criteria of truth.The dissertation has been divided into four chapters to illustrate the problem:Chapter One ‘Introduction’ research object referring to Jin Yuelin’s correspondence theory oftruth has been elaborated and key terminations including ‘truth’,‘correspondence theory of truth’ has beendefined. The dissertation has pointed out that the word ‘truth’ has been misunderstood as ‘verities’, leadingto many misunderstanding in ‘truth’ and related theory. The concept of ‘truth’ shall be comprehended as‘true’, instead of ‘verities’. The dissertation illustrated the definition of ‘correspondence theory of truth’ ofdifferent periods by scholars, such as: Aristotle believed that the truth of the statement has been determinedby coincidence with the fact stated; Locke’s correspondence theory of truth had been understood as‘concept(or proposition) shall be fit for the fact’; Russell believed that truth referred to the coincidencebetween faith（or judgment）and the fact; Wittgenstein’s correspondence theory of truth had beenunderstood as the coincidence between a statement and a certain fact. All the above viewpoints built up thetheory premise of the research.Chapter Two ‘Correspondence theory of truth’ has been disserted Jin Yuelin’s correspondencetheory of truth from three aspects of truth-bearers, fact, and correspondence. First, the dissertation pointedout that truth-bearers taken as the proposition, Jin Yuelin restricted the proposition as the thought expressedby declarative sentence. Secondly, the dissertation illustrated fact concept of Jin Yuelin in detail, pointingout that ‘fact’ understood by Jin Yuelin has been the objective condition correspondent to the proposition,which has objective existence and specification. Meanwhile, it should be current or happened facts, withoutfuture fact. Subsequently, the dissertation elaborated the comprehension of the concept ‘correspondence’ incorrespondence theory of truth by Jin Yuelin, pointing out that ‘correspondence’ has been understood by Jin Yuelin as correspondent relationship or nature, namely between the proposition and factcorrespondence.Chapter Three ‘True or false theory on the basis of correspondence theory of truth’, based on theresearch of correspondence theory of truth, the dissertation illustrated the theory on definition of truth andthe standard of true or false theory by Jin Yuelin. In the aspect of definition of truth, it has been defined ascorrespondence by Jin Yuelin, namely the coincidence of the proposition and the fact, and the standard oftrue or false judgment has been defined as integration, effectiveness and accordance, which are all thenecessary conditions of the truth, nor the sufficient conditions. Complex of three standards has been thesufficient conditions of the truth.‘Integration and effectiveness cannot be the truth standard’ promoted byProf. Hu Jun, and ‘the relationship between integration felt and three standards has not been illustrated byJin Yuelin’ has been stated in the dissertation, and proposed the own opinion.Chapter Four ‘The feature and meaning of Jin Yuelin’s correspondence theory of truth’, thecontent of three chapters above has been summarized in the chapter. The feature of Jin Yuelin’scorrespondence theory of truth is the proposition has been conducted as truth-bearers, and fact has beenconducted as truth-makers, and the correspondent relationship has been conducted as correspondence. JinYuelin’s correspondence theory of truth has significant impact on the research of ‘truth’ deeply and relatedtheory, and greatly promotion function to the research and development of philosophy and logic, withinimitable significance of times and modern meaning.
