Sonnets is a special existence in the history of Chinese modern poetry, whose connotations exceed the limitations of the time so much that it focuses on the existence of human beings. In an age in which Chinese culture was undergoing a paradigm shift, this focus on the individual existence has the significance in leading to new spiritual home. Being the ultimate attention to human beings, it presets no ultimate value. This thesis attempts to explore Sonnets' connotations and its inner conformity of the artistic form under the background of the development of Chinese modern poetry and Feng-Zhi's existentialism. It consists of three Chapters. Chapter 1 explores the inner relationship between existentialism and Fengzhi's early thought in his writings, which was the key for him to shaking off the crisis of thought. In Chapter 2, the author holds that, with an open structure, Sonnets begins with a life-and-death question, the most serious one of human existence, then goes through repeated experience and contemplation to understand the meaning of life, and finally gets to the true nature of human existence. Being a narration of thought, Sonnets gives people not ready-made conclusion, but permanent revelation. In Chapter 3, the author claims that there is a correspondence between the artistic form of sonnets and the poet's life experience, implying a process of experience and contemplation. Sonnets, with its solemn and quiet images and its fortification of time, is characterized of imposing style. The connotations of the poetry are enriched by the contradictions, entanglement and complement of each subject, the contrast and juxtaposition among sections and sentences, and the artful segmentation of long sentences, which resulted in a variety of interpretations. The concluding part supplements the attitudes towards reality in Sonnets by regarding it not only as an attention to reality, but also asa pursuit further than overcoming the hardship of reality.
