Walter Scott is called "the father of historic novels"in Europe. And his historic novels reveal typical romantic characteristics. In this paper the author takes Ivanhoe as main text to explore his times, the heritage of the European literary tradiction, his impact on the latter literature and the difference between eastern and western historical novels. So as to prove the status and significance of Scott and his historic novels in inheriting and developing the tradiction in the literary history of Europe.
