Yuan Shih-kai ( 1859-1916), also called Yuan wei-ting or Yuan rong-an, was born in Xiangckeng of Henan. In late Qing Dynasty, he went through a lot of great diplomatic incidents, aiid had his own comparatively abundant diplomatic ideas on which experts and scholars had little study. There are only several for the time being. These thesises on Yuan' s' diplomatic ideas and activities offered no systematic analyses and complete illustrations. So, there is certain research space remaining and it' s worth studying. This thesis will discuss Yuan' s diplomatic ideas and practices from five parts, hoping to discover contents of his diplomatic ideas, to discuss the influence and meaning of it, and to supply some revelations.Part 1: On Yuan' s sticking up for sovereignty in late Qing dynasty. This part will commend and discuss the following aspects: to regain administration sovereignty and territory sovereignty, to enforce sovereignty in self-opening economic ports, to stick up for national commercial rights. Part 2: On sticking up for peace with compromise. This part will describe his Compromise Diplomacy and ideas on abiding to international laws, and criticize his limitations in suppressing The Boxers Movement, etc.Part 3: On the diplomatic tactic of "making use of some foreign countries to constrain others national power" . This part will discuss his success and failure in making use of" imperialism' s contradictions , and failure in forming an alliance with the United State. Part 4: On Yuan' s maintaining Sino-Korean tributary4.relations and implementing Interfere Diplomacy in Korea. This part will indicate and commend aspects as followed: to defeatJapan' s and Russia' s attempts to occupy Korea, to interfere internal affairs and diplomacy of Korea, to help Korea to self-strengthen.Part 5: On Yuan' s measures of diplomatic constructions. This part will describe and commend following ideas and practices: self-strengthening in military affairs, revitalizing industry and commerc'e, importing foreign capital, training and appointing diplomatic talents, using foreign persons etc.
