Wu Tingfang has been famous as a patriotic diplomatist in modern China, He made great contribution to sticking up for state sovereignty and national interests, in his long diplomatic career. His diplomatic thoughts, containing ample contents, came into being in his diplomatic practice. This thesis,, which is divided into four parts, concentrated on Wu's diplomatic thoughts all~sidely.Part one expounds the basic targets of Wu's diplomatic thoughts. Defending state sovereignty, national interests and world peace were regarded as his basic diplomatic targets. Thus he tried to alter and abolish the unequal treaties, limited and cancelled western powers' privilege in China; attempted to protect overseas Chinese's interests; opposed power politics. Besides, he took promoting national power as the basis of realizing the basic diplomatic targets.Part two analyzes the basic principles of Wu's diplomatic thoughts. These principles include: independent diploma; taking international law as the principle of handling diplomatic relationship; equality, mutual benefits and mutual respect; peaceful conexistence and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.Part three discusses Wu's diplomatic strategy and maindiplomatic measures in diplomatic activities. The diplomatic strategy of balance of power was adopted by Wu. He took some effective diplomatic measures: to pay much attention to draw support from public opinion; to ally personages of various circles abroad; to spread eastern and western culture, promote mutual link and understanding.Part four probes in the influence and limits of Wu's diplomatic thoughts. They advanced the timely transform of Chinese diplomatic policy, enriched and expanded diplomatic objects and channels. However, Wu's recognition of the nature of imperialism was ambiguous to some extent, individual diplomatic advocate was impracticable and hard to carry out at that time.
