This paper attempts to explore Gothic elements in some of Keats' narrative poems by analyzing four of his poems. What is more, this thesis also compares Keats' Gothic elements with the traditional Gothic style of writing. These poems bear the Gothic elements in the description of the background, characters, mysterious symbols and the construction of the plots. As stated in the paper Keats does not describe the extremely horrible scene on purpose; the terror just exists partly and the horrifying feeling is made a bit mild by the poem' s inventing of beauty. The paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter mainly tells about some of the influence on Gothic novels and young Keats' Gothic tendency so that it is reasonable to say Keats' is somewhat influenced by the Gothic. The second chapter mainly illustrates with detailed analysis that the Gothic function in The Eve of St. Agnes and Isabella is to reveal a real world. The third chapter talks about in La belle Dame Sans Merci and The Eve of St. Mark the poet uses Gothic elements to present readers a world full of charming mysterious color. The conclusive part is a brief summary of the three chapters.
