In 1987, the publication of Beloved shocked the American literary world. Critics focused their studies mainly on the narrative method and black literary characteristics of the novel.This thesis holds the female Gothic characteristics of Beloved as a sally port to rescan the novel and dig out new meanings. Furthermore, it attempts to explore how the female Gothic genre holds an important function in conveying meanings of the novel. It includes four parts. Chapter one briefly introduces the novel, the author and the female Gothic; Chapter two is a detailed analysis of the female Gothic heroines in Beloved; Chapter three digs the meanings of the haunted enclosures and the heroines'happy ending in the novel; Chapter four is the Conclusion.
