India was the most important colony of Britain in modern history. British colonial rule had a far-reaching influence on the development of Indian society, one of which was the start of the Indian modern industry. With the guide of Marx's colonialism double mission theory, this paper analyses the development of the Indian modern industry during the colonial period in detail. After the Industrial Revolution, British colonialist reformed the Indian feudal economic structure and transplanted modern factory to India for its own sake, which promoted the emergence of Indian modem industry ahead of time objectively. In the 1850s, modern factories established by British capitalists and national factories established by Indian national capitalists appeared in modem India In the following time, British colonialist built many railways in India, and their capital industries developed greatly. The Indian national capitalist concentrated on the development of their own industries in the same time. On the eve of the independence of India, these two kinds of industries both developed to some extent, and the Indian modern industry had formed a preliminary system. The thesis consists of the introduction, the main body of three parts and the conclusion.Introduction explains the significance of choosing this topic and the thinking of this paper. Part one of main body expounds how the British rule destroyed the Indian feudal economic structure after the Industrial Revolution. Part two expounds the development of British capitalist industry in India, and put emphasize on the development of railways and the jute industry. Part three expounds the development of Indian modern national industry under the British colonial rule. Finally, expounds the role played by British colonialism in the process of Indian modern industrialization.
