The United Kingdom adjusted its policy in South Asia and decided to withdraw from India after the Second World War. The UK-India relations transformed from suzerain and colony into two sovereign states. The British government made two plans to rebuild UK-India diplomatic relations. After comparing two plans, the British government would rather India to be a Dominion and a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations, than an independent status without the Commonwealth. But India's desire to secede from the Commonwealth challenged Britain's planning. In June 1947, India accepted Dominion status as the price of early independence, UK-India relations was rebuilt preliminarily. However, such relations mode disturbed India's intention to be an independent sovereign republic. In October 1948, India changed its attitude towards the Commonwealth and restarted discussion with the British government, insisting to modulate the institution of the British Commonwealth for India's independent status. Finally, the two nations reached agreement, achieved the new UK-India relations within the Commonwealth, the UK-India relations entered into a new phase.
