| As of Lu Hsun studies, researchers used to limited their sight within Lu as an individual and his texts, while neglecting the questions that Lu Hsun once asked himself, such as whether the proposition of the national character is true or false and what problems are existing in actuality, etc... I think that research purposes can only be achieved by seeking valid resources from the research object so that solutions to current issues may be worked out. In China's modernization, Lu Hsun studies should have a foothold in modernity problem. In fact, we may say that Lu Hsun, directly or indirectly, influenced China's modernization and Lu Hsun as an individual as well as related events constituted a phenomenon during the course of China's modernization, which I define as "Lu Hsun phenomenon". This phenomenon reflects in all sides the problems occurring in the process of China's pursuit of modernization. This essay, through phenomenological reduction of the " Lu Hsun phenomenon", in combination with a western perspective of modernity, aims to explore the problems that take place in China's modernization and try to provide possible answers based on empirical facts. Concrete points are as follows:The first part introduces the methodology and perspective used in this essay. By interpreting in brief the method of phenomenology and the concept of modernity, this text points out that the research on phenomenological analysis of Lu Hsun & "Lu Hsun phenomenon" is only limited to the spirit of phenomenology and my version of phenomenological methodology. As to the interpretation of modernity, I adopt the concept by Michel Foucault, so as to find out the common ground between modernity with post-modernity.Through research into Lu's philosophical life and texts , the second part concentrates on the most noticeable point of Lu Hsun thoughts-"Become yourself, which has been long neglected while the idea of "For mass' sake" has been established as the essence of Lu Hsun thoughts. I believe, however, "For mass' sake" sets Lu as an subject and overlooks Lu's thought of "For self s sake" and equality between culture and man so that some obscure texts cannot be interpreted reasonably, such as"Epitaph" and " Revenge 2", etc... Also, the concept of "For mass' sake" hints rank consciousness, culturalization and utilitarianism on the purposes. The thought of "Become yourself presents positive answers to these problems. This part comprises two sections, "The exploration of self & "Making self in fulfillment".The third part passes to the reduction of "Lu Hsun phenomenon", I think the emergence of phenomenon has nothing to do with Lu Hsun. The reason lies in the absence of "ego" in China's modernization process. Discussing on this falls into four minor points. 1, "Contestation" views the problems in the contestation and reasons by means of phenomenological research; 2, "A different Lu Hsun", in the perspective of "Mao Ze Tong's Lu Hsun", reaches for the problems and reasons; 3, Thorough research and researchers' alienation from Lu Hsun; 4, "Lu Hsun and communism", inquires into the interaction between Lu and communism in order to explore the reasons.The fourth part states that due to the neglect of "ego", China's modernization suffers from "man's loss" and culture makes means rather than ends so that cultural spirit is shadowed by material modernization. But Lu Hsun is different. He never neglected "Become yourself at a cultural spirit level. He even viewed it as a means of achieving material modernization. Discussing is divided into two minor point: 1, "Lu Hsun and modernity", concerns affirmative and non-affirmative aspect of the two; 2, "Lu Hsun phenomenon and modernity" discusses the relationship also affirmatively and non-affirmatively.Through the review of Lu Hsun , Lu Hsun phenomenon and modernity, we have found out the valuable point of Lu Hsun thoughts, ie. , "Become yourself, which has long been neglected in Lu Hsun studies and the ignorance has directly caused a great deal of setbacks and loss in China's modernization co... |
