A Study On Zhang Xuecheng's Thought About Literary Theory

Professor Zhang Shaokang has ever clearly pointed out that Zhang Xuecheng' s literary theory, on the one hand, stands for many scholars' opinions in the time of Qian-Jia, on the other hand, has some peculiar knowledge, different from ordinary scholars. However, until now, scholars haven't theoretically discussed Zhang' s peculiar literary thoughts. So some elementary discussions are made from the relationship between his literary thoughts and Chinese traditional literary theory, so that we can understand the peculiarities and meanings of his literary theory.The thesis is divided into six parts.Introduction: The author briefly illustrates the values and meanings of choosing the thesis, including the present research state.Chapter One: The author analyses Zhang's peculiar literary viewpoint mainly form his opinions of "writing and learning " , "classics and annals" and "writing and method" . He lays stress on the importance of "learning" , because he thinks that writing and learning can't be separated form each other, that writing is the realization in words of what one has gained from learning. So argumentation, textual research and rhetoric are all ways of seeking for methods.Chapter Two: The author interprets Zhang's demands of writing mainly form "form and content" , "fabrication and peculiarity" , "means and annotation" . Viewpoint of "form and content" , viewpoint of fabrication, viewpoint of peculiarity and viewpoint of method allemphasizes learning.Chapter Three: the author explains Zhang's aesthetic principles of writing mainly form the discussion of "clarity in thought makes coherence in writing" , "truth in thesis prevents rambling argumentation" , "profound argumentation ensures forcefulness" ,' "clarity and truth" of what he said are in fact the relationship between "learning and writing" .Chapter four: The author verifies Zhang's peculiar literary viewpoint mainly form his criticism of Yuan Mei. The similarities and differences of poetry and textual research which they treated originate from their different learning and temperament.Addition: The author tries to make sense of similarities and differences between Zhang' s literary theory and Qian-Jia science from the point of Qian-Jia science and Chinese traditional literary theory. At the same time, Zhang inherits and exceeds traditional literary theory.
