The object of this article is " Xiang Rui " in portrait stone graves of Han dynasty.The portrait stone grave of Handynasty is a kind of grave,which dug the earth hollow of vertical cave type underground, and built with the material ofstones and bricks,and looked like the house on the ground,with carved portrait on stones in order to decorate. The content of portrait is very rich. In which a kind of potrait is called " Xiang Rui " by current researchers. " XiangRui "are plants or animals with strange looks which are rare in the world, their contents reflected the thoughts of the personof ancient times. This paper divides into 5 parts altogether: The first part is the research historical and research present situation about " Xiang Rui ". During Northen Song Dynasty, portrait stones of Han Dynasty had aroused the notice of the scholars who researchedcultura relics. But before establishing the People's Republic of China,the study on " Xiang Rui " in portrait stones of HanDynasty is still a field that not developed. After establishing of New China,the excavate and study on portrait stones of HanDynasty, especially about " Xiang Rui ", can divided into two stages. First stage is from beginning of 50 decade to the end of 70 decade of 20 century.Because of many reason, " Xiang Rui " in portrait stones of Han Dynastyhad been payed not enough attention to during thisperiod. Explainations about " Xiang Rui " were also very limited. Second stage general is from the beginning of 80 decade of 20 century to now.During this period," Xiang Rui " has 59become the really researched object of archaeologists. But, current accomplishments show that scholars are very notconsistent about the definition of " Xiang Rui ", and the views about the role of " Xiang Rui " are also not consistent. Andthe views about the history of " Xiang Rui " are very not consistent,too.All these show that the research space about" XiangRui "is very vast,and this is studied possibly providing for us. Second part is the definition and the judgement about " Xiang Rui ". Plants or the animals with strange looks in portrait stones of Han Dynasty have been called " Xiang Rui " by currentarchaeologists, but " Xiang Rui " is not a archaeological noun originally. The people of Chinese ancient times thinked thatthe sky is mutual influence with person , unifies mutually. They called plants or the animals with strange looks" Xiang Rui", also the meaning of lucky things.The appearance of " Xiang Rui " signified that it was very good for emperor toadminister country, therefore in Han Dynasty" Xiang Rui "is very popular.Since " Xiang Rui " is very rare, it is also verydifficult for the person of ancient times to judge " Xiang Rui ". In the book " about balance and about Xiang Rui "writen by Wang Chong in Eastern Han Dynasty, he pointed out that "Xiang Rui " looked different from ordinary things.Some had sign appearances,so we can know it's name. Some looked very strange , even if not knowing its name actually,wecan also judging it's a " Xiang Rui ". " Xiang Rui " is often followed by a group of animals. Miao Yu, the official of Xuzhou in Eastern Han period. In his grave there are some strange animals carved in a portraitstone, with names. According to names, we can judge that these animals are " Xiang Rui ". But how to know other plants orthe animals in portrait stones of Han Dynasty is " Xiang Rui " or not,when they have no names. 60Some animals carved in portrait stones of Han Dynasty have signs with them,or their looks are very strange, orfollowed by birds and beasts.Their outstanding caracteristics are same as what recorded in documents about judging " XiangRui".There are a lot of animals or plants on the way of depicting additionally in portrait stones.
