Self-esteem is an individual's positive emotional observation of self-value which is derived from constant social weighing and checking. The healthy observation of self-esteem is closely related with many positive mental qualities, and plays a great important role in individual's psychological development. There are many factors affecting adolescents' self-esteem. Experiencing success in school is one of the most important factors. However, up to now, the study of school factors affecting students' self-esteem has been inadequate in china. Here, this dissertation attempts to explore into the relationship between school factors (such as teacher-student relation and academic achievement) and the development of self-esteem. It is to provide some operational advice to improve teacher-student relation and help students develop much healthier physically and mentally by changing teachers' attitude and behaviors.The study is mainly based on questionnaire survey in which three schools in Guilin and Longan are chosen as the objects. The study shows:1. The development of junior students' self-esteem is very unsteady and varies with the rise of grade. The average score of the first grade middle school pupils is the highest among three grades. From the second grade, about 14 years old, students' self-esteem begins to have a trend to descend.2. The teacher-student relation is quite different between city and county, and varies with grade. The teacher-student relation of the first grade middle school pupils is the best and begins to descend with the rising of grade. Teachers' participation varies with sex and grade.3. The total scores and its factors of teacher-student relation varies with the total scores of self-esteem and its factors. Regression analysis shows that teacher-student relation and self-esteem can be predicated respectively according to their factors.4. Academic achievement affects the development of junior students' self-esteem. In reverse, students' self-esteem degree also affects their academicachievement.Lastly, this dissertation gives some suggestions to educators and parents——cultivating students' self-esteem must be paid more attention to in order to promote their physical and mental health.
