On The Preservation Of Cultural Value In Translation

This current thesis observes the phenomenon of preserving in the target text (TT) the cultural value of the source text (ST) in the process of translation. The observation conducted in the current research stems from the question of whether there is certain value generated by the culture-specificity conveyed in the ST in the process of translating. Along with this observation, the phenomena associated with the preservation of cultural value, namely, culture markers and culture value, will be examined in an attempt to deconstruct the phenomenon of cultural value preservation. The phenomena of culture markers and cultural value have come under elaborate scrutiny conducted by translation theorists both in China and abroad. Their research findings will introduced in the current thesis to enforce the probe into the subject matter of this thesis. The aim of this current thesis is to emphasize the importance of cultural value preservation in translation in order for such a phenomenon to become a matter necessary for translation practitioners to take into consideration in the process of translating. In this current thesis, theories relevant to culture markers and cultural value shall be introduced and employed to help deconstruct the phenomenon of cultural value preservation. In addition, the theories concerning cognitive psychology will be cited so as to analyze the phenomena of culture markers and cultural value. Based on the introduction of these theories, the relationship between culture markers and cultural value will be clarified by a simple linear schema that depicts the way in which culture markers exhibit the cultural value of culture-specificity in translation. The author of this current thesis will investigate the phenomenon of preserving cultural value in translation by specifying the reasons for which the preservation of cultural value becomes necessary hi the process of translating and clarifying the relationship between such matters as culture markers and cultural value. In this thesis, theauthor will adopt the method of research that combines theoretical treatise and practical exemplification.
