The nature of translation as interlingual performance makes it necessary to make translation studies connected with other branches of modern linguistics, especially text linguistics for text is the central defining issue in translation. Much study has been made on cohesion and coherence, two concepts in text linguistics, yet the relevance of cohesion and coherence to translation is paid little attention to. This thesis attempts to make a research from a comparative perspective and a textual perspective on cohesion and coherence, also two standards of textuality, in terms of English-Chinese translation. Various devices which lend texts their qualities of cohesion and coherence, in both the source language and the target language are the concerns and the research on them will shed light on translation studies and instruct translation practice. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | cohesion, coherence, translation, text linguistics, contrastive linguistics, cohesive devices, theme, rheme, thematic progression, textual coherence | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
