Aspects Of Theme/Rheme To EST Translation

In this paper, a measure for EST (English for Science and Technology) translation—an approach of theme/rheme to EST translation is provided. This measure facilitates the basic and main steps of translation:(1) A thorough comprehension of English;(2) An accurate and smooth reconstruction of original information; (3) A maintaining of cohesion and coherence in Chinese; (4) An equivalence effect is easy to achieve. Chapter 1 is an introduction. In the second chapter, the author introduces the notion of theme/rheme that based on British linguist M.A.K.Halliday's systemic-functional grammar. Theme is the point of the departure of a message, rheme is the remainder of the message. In addition, the author makes an introduction of Danes' thematic progression pattern. Then, thematic progression patterns in English and Chinese are analyzed respectively. Chapter 3 is devoted to the discussion of theme/rheme and EST translation as well as the criterion for EST translation. The discussion is mainly from Halliday and Nida's theories. The conclusion of the discussion is: the criterion for EST translation is functional equivalence. And theme/rheme can be adopted as a UT in EST translation.The focus of chapter 4 is on the application of preceding theory. Within sentence boundaries, the inconsistency of themes in English and Chinese are the focus of the analysis. Then, EST sentence group comes on the stage of our study. In this chapter, the author firstly shows that recognizing thematic progression patterns in an EST text will greatly help the comprehension of the English text and consequently facilitate translation.
