"Folk" is a new concept ,in literary history, proposed by Mr. Chen Sihe. The concept refects a change of value in writing and opens a new domain in the research of literary histroy. On the basis of narration, the author devides "folk" into two categories: firstly, the life contents of the folk; secondly, the narrative stage of the folk, and discusses the folk cultural images in Mo Yan's writing.Part one reaches three folk narrative images; that is sense, story and carnival. Sense is the starting point of Mo's folk narration. It is revealed in the life contents of the sense and the narrative strategy of the sense. The latter appears more mature since it can include more things than the former. Story is the history emboded in the folk.lt can be devided into the distributed memory of the history and the family memory of the history according to the appearance of the story. Carnival is the true aspect of the folk. It is revealed in three types of spirits: political carnival, folk carnival and word carnival. The three folk narrative images compose the folk narrative in Mo's works.Part two is the discussion ahout the relation between the poetic characteristics of Mo's folk narration and Qilu folk cultuer. The author believes the three narrative images can reveal the follow-up of the style of "fantasy" and "exaggeration" of Qi's folk culture in the form.The topics about life is the modern change of Qi culture. The dependence on Qi culture constitutes the modern change of Lu folk culture.Thechildhood of the author, the enlightment of "the country" in western literature and the connection of the author with the realities of Qilu folk culture in his recalling of his hometown.In part three, the author holds that Mo's writing, which is for common people, and his expression of the folk ethics. His writing returns ordinary people into human being. By denying political heros and expanding the humanism of the talented, he makes a good absoption of new literary tradition.In the conclusion, the author points out that the composition of Mo Yan not only involves the narrative change in literature but also testifies the profound productivity of "folk" to literary writing.This is the greatest enlightment and contributions that Mo Yan left to literary history.
