D. H. Lawrence, the famous writer of Britain, is always the hot spot in the field of the criticism. But there is few critics who explore his several special novels written in his late life, such as one of his representative of the novel - the Plumed Serpent. At the same time, the critics seldom study on Lawrence's philosophical salvation ideal and his sexual and the literature salvation ideal. Therefore, I will explore Lawrence's developing process of his ideal and writing in this thesis through above blank fields of the study, analyzing his ideal of the sexuality and its practical patterns shown in his novels. The method of analyzing in the thesis is to begin with the text-perusal and excavate the substance from the appearance. So I divide the thesis into four chapters. With the text-perusal to the Plumed Serpent as the first layer of this thesis, I start the particularity of this novel-the mysterious Indian religion and analyze the necessity of its birth, then deduce Lawrence's three stages of his developing thoughts. I analyze Lawrence's ideal of the sexuality and its three practical patterns of the relationship between man and woman. But I find there exists deep contradictions between his ideal and his patterns. His ideal about the sexuality is the harmonious interconnection of body and soul between man and woman, which has close relation to his philosophy of the life and the religion of the sexuality. However, the three patterns shown in his novels contradict deeply with his ideal. This is because the true nature of his ideal is to set up the hegemony of man and surpass the independence of woman, which is relatively close to the author's particular experiences and surroundings of his time. In the third layer, I explore Lawrence's philosophical idea shown in the novel, in which the life philosophy is the core of hisphilosophy. In the last layer, I get back to the novel and begin with Lawrence's ideal of literature, analyzing how the construction of the novel and the image of the heroine embody the writer's ideal of the literature, emphasizing on the studying on the complicated and delicate ambivalence of the heroine. The thesis aims at grasping the developing thread of Lawrence's thoughts through above-mentioned four layers in order to comprehend the novel the Plumed Serpent and Lawrence himself thoroughly.
