The Laughters In Carnival

Russian famous literary critic and thinker Mikhail Bakhtin illustrated his theory of folk humour culture in Dostoevsky's Poetic Problems and Rabelais' Creation and Folk Culture of Middle Ages and Renaissance respectively. The thesis is elaborated on the basic point of laughter in carnival, also examines again components, essence, feature, function of the folk humour culture and its significance in the contemporary China.The thesis starts from Bakhtin's miserable fate, and points out the relation between the writer's experiences in his whole life and folk humour culture. Folk humour culture originates from the carnival of ancient Greece and Roman, and achieved the summit in Rabelai's creation of the Renaissance, and even had its own basic forms. The second part emphatically discusses the components of folk humour culture, that is, the space-time component, the body component, the language component and the laughter component. In my opinion, the carnival square is the space-time base where the laughters can be produced. The grotesque body here certainly is the happy body , and this happiness comes from not only the sense organ of the flesh , but also from the spirit , and has positive significance. Language component from the folk is the combination of sneer and praise, so it has double-meaning effects. The double-meaning effects can make folk language vivid and release fearful mood of the people who lived under the official culture . Laughters herebecome a kind of world outlook , and contend with the world outlook of the official culture . Human can go back to himself again in humour , and feel his own value in close and joyful contact with others . The thesis examines again the essence and feature of the theory . In my opinions , the essence of the folk homor culture is to define and publicize freedom on the basis of subverting official order ,it also includes the confirmation and respect to the people's pursuit for the present happiness , and affirms that people looks forward to good future , which is full of optimism . I illustrate the feature of the folk humor culture from five angles . Non-official character , which is equivalent to the folk character , is the basis standpoint and principle , and its positive significance lies in that it offers the possibility of shaking off the solemn character of the official world . Humour , not noly is a kind of the public's behavior which relates with the world outlook , at the same time , but also includes a kind of original vitality . It is just a most genuine laughter from the people's heart, hence , such humour is a kind of original character . In laughters , people get the freedom and liberation of the body and soul . And the laughers make people get a afresh life and development. In addition , the laughters in carnival include the character of the double-face and the Utopia character . In the fourth part ,the thesis emphatically discusses the function of folk humour culture . From my point of view , the relations between homour and the gravity of official culture are dialecticallyunities . On the one hand , they are opposite , on the other hand ,homour is purification and supplement for gravity , which make humor have the function of emancipation . Folk humor culture builds Utopia of the folk culture on the basis of objecting Utopia of the official culture . From this point ,Bakhtin established the dialogue relationship between the official culture and the folk culture . Therefore ,this culture has dialogue function , the profound ideology and its uniqueness which comes from the dialogue determines the penetrative as well as the distinctive in folk humor culture of Bakhtins' research.Finally , in my opinions , Bakhtin's theory about folk humor culture has rather positive significance to the contemporary in China . Firstly , its folk position and the attitude towards folk culture , contain the confirmation and respect for integrity of human , also affirm human future and optimism .
