In mankind society, the religion always occupies the important position. Up to today, the religion has been permeating in the human society, and influencing mankind negatively and positively.On the religious problem, it is thought that a church will be perished along with the high development of the society. However, the religion still exists in our country, though there's not exploitation any more, and the science and technology have got the substantial development. This shows that the existence of the religion has a close connection with its history and culture. We can't simply consider it as science and class. This essay involves the theories on religion by E. Durkheim and Max Weber, the religious origin and its function at present, particularly its function of integration, the relation between religion and science, and personal needs in competing system.The essay mainly deals with the current necessities of the religion according to the Chinese present condition: poor productivity, social alienation and the increase in the number of the people who have a religious belief.The thesis is divided into six parts.I. IntroductionOn the basis of the description of the basic circumstance of religion in the world and at the present stage of our countries in brief, the writer puts forward the question of this thesis: the religion constantly adjusts itself to the social changes by making use of its social function--integration, social transition and people's requirements to it. And on the other hand, the society adapts to the religious change for steady development.II. Theories OverviewThe religious function is a consciousness to integrates, maintain or rebuild the community the inside some mental states appearance according to the theories by E. Durkheim and Max Weber. The author puts forward at the same time that the religion can be used as the quilt for the oppressors to develop its positive and social function under the particular history. III. Current Function of ReligionIt is maintained by author through the social conformity, mental serenity and cultural function of religion that its long existence with the human history lies in the social function and people's needs for it. Social integration is one of the sociology core in the theories. One of the important characteristics of the religious integration is to draw the individual, group, and class on different levels together to constitute a common religious community through its sacred and dignity power. Only religion has this kind of integration. It can not only overstep theranks, but also the nations and races. Sharing the same belief, the followers can easily form a stable community and conform to the doctrines. That is to say, the religion belief helps to strengthen the feeling of belonging. As " a feeling beyond the secular world", religion teaches people how to keep the mental serenity, particularly in the competition society, and the religious rite activities help to alleviate the pain and calm down emotion of the followers.IV. The Religion Exists Still While Science DevelopingThis parts discusses the existence of religion and its function along with the development of science. In modern society, traditional religion is not a unique spirit pillar for people any more. While the economy developing, the technology progressing, and transportation being convenient, people today experience spiritually the solitude and loneliness. The modern civilization created by man makes him feel insignificant and pitiful. Though the modern civilization cuts off the bridge that takes people to mystery and supernatural existence, man's pursuit for the ultimate concern still exists. Hence, in the later half of the 20th century, a new religious reformation happened, which found supports from traditional ideas. Through its various rites, the followers felt the homely warmth and intimate companionship in the religious group.
