Study On Cross-Cultural Adaptation Of Overseas Students In China

Abstract/Summary:
As the new era coming,China’s overall national strength and international status have improved gradually.Countries around the world have paid more and more attention to Chinese language and Chinese culture.More and more international friends choose to study Chinese and Chinese culture in China as the "Chinese Hot" spread out in the world.For overseas students in China,because there are differences in basic national conditions,language and culture,food,clothing,housing and transportation,customs and habits between China and its home country,cross-cultural adaptation may become the primary problem that international students need to face after coming to China.Therefore,on the premise of summarizing the relevant literature on cross-cultural adaptation research,this paper designs a study on cross-cultural adaptation of international students in China,taking the international students studying in Chongqing Jiaotong University as an example,drawing lessons from U-shaped curve theory,cultural shock theory,cultural adaptation model theory and cultural adaptation process theory.Due to the epidemic situation of COVID-19,some international students failed to return to China after returning to China.In order to complete the questionnaire,this study relies on "Questioning Stars" to distribute online questionnaires to international students studying at Chongqing Jiaotong University.Until December 2020,95 questionnaires were distributed and 95 questionnaires were recovered,with a recovery rate of 100%.Among them,there were 89 valid questionnaires and 6 invalid questionnaires,and the effective recovery rate was 93.7%.By spreading out with the questionnaire statistics and the interview content analysis,the author finds that the international students studying in Chongqing Jiaotong University are generally well adapted to social and cultural life,psychological adaptation and academic adaptation,but there are still some cross-cultural adaptation problems.In terms of social and cultural life,it is mainly reflected in language(dialect)communication adaptation,diet adaptation,climate adaptation and mobile consumption adaptation;In the aspect of psychological adaptation,the difficulty of cross-cultural adaptation is mainly reflected in the inadaptation to the special teaching methods of online teaching;In the aspect of academic adaptation,the difficulties of cross-cultural adaptation mainly focus on academic research(thesis writing),teaching methods and resource utilization,and academic examinations.Besides,in terms of influencing factors of cross-cultural adaptation,the cross-cultural adaptation of overseas students in China is influenced by many factors,among which the three most important factors include learning motivation,Chinese proficiency,and cultural distance between home and China.At last,according to the survey results,the author puts forward specific measures from three aspects: international students,training institutions and society,to promote the cross-cultural adaptation of overseas students in China.From the perspective of international students,they can enhance their intercultural communication awareness and ability by actively participating in intercultural training.Meanwhile,foreign students should set clear learning goals,increase their interest in learning Chinese,and play a positive role in psychological suggestion,so as to continuously improve their Chinese level and promote their social and cultural life communication,professional study and academic research.From the perspective of training institutions,training institutions should first establish a sound cross-cultural training system to provide a platform for international students to participate in cross-cultural training;Secondly,improve the management system of international students,implement undifferentiated management,enhance the cultural distance between international students and Chinese students,and promote the integration of international students into Chinese social groups;Furthermore,they should establish an effective communication platform,always pay attention to the physical and mental health of international students,discover and solve their problems in cross-cultural adaptation in time,enhance friendship and cultivate trust;Finally,they can improve the teaching staff and provide good teaching interaction for foreign students to adapt to cross-culture.From the perspective of society,the society should improve public facilities and services,enhance citizens’ moral quality and enhance China’s overall social tolerance,and communicate with overseas students on the basis of mutual understanding and respect,so as to promote their social and cultural life adaptation,psychological adaptation and academic adaptation.
