With farewell poems by exiled officials (hereafter referred to as FP ) as studying subject, this dissertation intends to reveal the psychological and social causes of Return Complex reflected in FP as compared with farewell poems by the otherwise. By means of statistics, this dissertation first analyzes the changing writing features of FP among different periods of time, namely, Early, Zenithal, Middle, and Late Tang dynasty, then probes, on the basis of case study, social and political factors that contribute to their creation. And finally, the dissertation analyzes the unique artistic features of FP from the perspective of communication.Chapter I. This chapter first analyzed the causes of exiles. Then, by comparing differences between FP and ordinary farewell poems, the dissertation points out that there exists in FP a unique Home-return Complex, especially a Court-return Complex. Using the method of metrological analysis, this chapter further discusses the causes of the complex, especially social and political factors.Chapter II consists of three case studies of FP by Zhang Yue, Liu Zhangqing, and Liu Zongyuan. By comparing different manifestations of their Court-return Complex, the chapter generalizes common and different features of their poems, which testify further the important role political factors play in the creation of their poems.Chapter III gives a detail analysis of artistic features of FP in terms of using of images; ways to express feelings; and diction. Comparing common images used in such FP as "White Head" and "Lonely Boat" with those in ordinary farewell poems, the dissertation points out subtle differences between the two. Such differences are more apparent when we take into consideration some unique images and allusions used in FP, such as the image of willow, and allusions of Jiasheng and Yufan. Apart from these, this chapter also analyzes FP'S unique ways of expressing feelings, and characteristic usages of quantifiers and words about space and time with concrete examples.Chapter IV analyzes the characteristics of FP from the viewpoint of communication, and argues that communication of these poems acquire the features of complicated communication. For most writers of FP, social status of indirect receivers is far more important than that of direct receivers. This feature also contributes to the creation of FP and leaves traces on their contents and artistic features.
