In the existing research of the relation between T.S.Eliot and the school of nine Ieaves,much attention were paid to Eliot's influence on the nine Chinese poets while the diffrences between them are not fully disclosed. The main purpose of this paper is to make clear the unique thinking and meditation of the nine Chinese poets as they inspired by some of Eliot's poetic ideas and speculation of time and self.It is sure that these unique thinking of nine leaves is associated with the reality of that era and the our cultural tradition.The first chapter of this paper gives some new description of Eliot's influence upon the nine leaves.The second chapter makes comparison on the subject of time between Eliot and the nine leaves.Both of them have realized the limit of time,and want to find out the way to break away these limit.Eliot's way is radically religious,and he makes God's sense of time the ultimate direction,while the nine leaves show us the precious consciousness of enlightenment and the independence of art.The third chapter is a comparison about self-redemption.Both Eliot and the school of nine leaves have expressed a tendency of turning to cultural tradition in order to get rid of individual dilemma.In the tendency.Eliot have showed a thorough self-negation which embodies deep cognition of the limit of self,hot desire to master the truth of world and the effort to establish an ideal self.The nine leaves rewrite the concept nothing of lao zi,and make it a useful source of self-refreshing for secular life.The last chapter points out the common meaning of the image "water".and probes into the causes to the diffrences between the image "fire" in the workes of Eliot and the nine Chinese poets.
