The Study Of Metonymy Words In Modern Chinese

This thesis systematically studies the metonymy words in modern Chinese ,based on Modern Chinese Dictionary(enlarged edition). We mainly define and classify metonymy words in modern Chinese at first ,then analyse the characteristics and the source,pointing out the important problems in present study. We hope this thesis will contribute to the study of metonymy words.Firstly ,we briefly summarize the main problems of present study,and expound the present study and the value of metonymy words, regarding Modern Chinese Dictionary(enlarged edition) as the main language material,and at the same time select properly some metonymy words that are often used and have regular meaning.Secondly,we explain what belong to metonymy words through a lot of language materially analyzing the relation and difference in category metonymy style purpose between metonymy words and metonymy rhetoric metonymy words and metonymy meaning of a word,which help people understand the relation among them accurately and objectively.Then,we classify metonymy words in modern Chinese into two types 14 subdivisions,according to metonymy style,and analyse their characteristics and reason in syllable, the meaning of a word and grammar.In syllable,they are mainly disyllabiccompound words;The meaning of a word is indirect, monosemantic and polysemous; In grammar,it is composed of noun, verb and adjective;Metonymy words include joint construction, modified construction and verb-object construction.Fourthly,we explore the source of metonymy words from three angles of society, language and cognition,especially exposing cognitive source,which will not only be useful to know metonymy words,but also be indispensable to divide the line between metonymy words and metonymy rhetoric.Although metonymy words play an important role in modern Chinese, we have not pay more attention to them. So,we should study them as more quickly as we can.In the last part,we summarize the points of view,and point out other problems and the direction of study.
