A Cultural Explanation On Mao Dun's Early Fictions About "Modern Women"

In modern Chinese literature, the Modern Women in Mao Dun's early fictions are unique. They not only showed the writer's disillusion after the great revolution's defeat, but also implicated his abundance psychology of culture, at the same time the author placed his political ideality on them.The prelude looks back the production briefly in the past few years, and introduces the stimulation, the importance and the purpose of this thesis.The main body of this thesis proceeds with three aspects.The first part is the creating mode of Mao Dun's Modern Women. In the 1920s Mao Dun was a new hand in the aspect of fiction creation, but he appeared to have a skilled and adept art. There were three concrete form of the creating mode in Mao Dun's early fictions: Firstly, the mode as a foil to the negative part from one another not only made clear the developing veining of thought of the characters, but also strengthened the shock of the theme. Secondly, the using of the triangle mode gave an elucidatory space of radiation to the text. Thirdly, the transect mode mixed up with the sense floating of the characters as a whole, which broke through the special limit of life section, and fulfilled the content of transect fictions. To explore Mao Dun's fiction world from the angle of the creating mode, his creating mode undoubtedly represented the transformation of the modern Chinese literature.The second part is an explanation of Mao Dun's writing attitude about Modern Women. Mao Dun stood an experiencing stance towards history. There was a great contrast voice in the whole story. One was worrying, resenting and destroying, the other was calm despite all the characters' suffering. The author was so heartbroken and indignant that he had to accord with his sensation and the influence of the greatrevolution. Mao Dun replaced men's central status intentionally. Modern Women stood out in the content of men's social-political situation. Revolution badgered with sex in the epidemic of "Revolution and Love". Compared with Modern Women's energy, men stood behind the curtain and felt feeble generally. Modern Women reflected the author's introspection and deviation from the "Anima" prototype. Mao Dun manifested himself in his writing attitude. On one hand, Mao Dun's mother played an important role in influencing his subsequent woman archetype. On the other hand, Mao Dun's traditional prototype was struck at the women revolutionist in the chaos epoch. Modern Women were so outstanding that Mao Dun appreciated them very much and he created the ideal women in mind with all his strength.The third part is about conflict and choice in a construction of Mao Dun's individually critical psychology of culture in the impact of west culture on the east. The modern women reflected that he was regarded as the cultural giant's open cultural consciousness and the builder's courage. The appearance of modern women followed the Chinese and Western colliding with fierce social change. Mao Dun had been already happy to admire the bravery, unruly, freedom, equality of the western civilization which had been regarded as marine culture, and to yearn for the implication and peace of traditional culture on the agriculture foundation. Raising the time spirit of culture, Mao Dun incorporated the excellence of traditional culture and western culture into a whole, didn't adhere to past practices, didn't follow blindly, focused on the reality of China, showed his realistic and asked for the real spirit of practice. Mao Dun reached to traditional surpassing and to modern restructure in a kind of new culture background. Mao Dun was adjusting his own culture psychology constantly, didn't forget his own modern civilization degree while enlightening others.
