This dissertation applies Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation to Chinese-English translation of abstracts in sci-tech theses, with the purpose to provide theoretical and practical guidance for Chinese-English translation of sci-tech abstracts so as for the target text to be: 1) identical to truthful and scientific information of the ST; 2) terse and comprehensible, clear and natural for the readership; 3) conformance with norms of English abstracts. This dissertation consists of five chapters, whose main contents are as follows:Chapter One: an introduction about the research purpose, approach and significance of this dissertation as well as its organization and structure.Chapter Two: after surveying the overall background of TS, the eternal concern "the degree of latitude" and related translation theory and methods are introduced. Particularly, Newmark's theory of semantic translation and communicative translation is thoroughly and comprehensively expounded in terms of its content and significance, which establishes the theoretical foundation for the following research.Chapter Three: Relevant notions of abstracts in sci-tech theses are introduced in terms of the definition, classification and content. As well, the stylistic features of sci-tech abstracts in English are discussed and comparatively, problems in current Chinese-English translation of abstracts in sci-tech theses and related study are summarized, which establishes the practical necessity and significance for the dissertation.Chapter Four: The applicability of semantic translation and communicative translation to Chinese-English translation of abstracts in sci-tech theses is validated with Newmark's discussions on the relationship between language functions and translation methods. Afterwards, the author puts forward three criteria for Chinese-English translation of abstracts in sci-tech theses with regard to previous sci-tech translation criteria. Finally, the theoretical guidance and practical significance of semantic translation and communicative translation for Chinese-English translation of abstracts in sci-tech theses are testified at the lexicon, syntax and discourse levels.Chapter Five: A brief conclusion is drawn and some deficiency of this dissertation and direction for further research are pointed out.
