The society has entered into the information era in the 21st century while the whole world began the aged times. Most articles are designed for 18 to 65-year-old people, whereas the seniors covering over 10 percent of the world population feel hard to find the appropriate products, especially the household appliances. This thesis summarizes some principles and methods of man-machine interface design adapted to old people used appliances aiming to improve the present situation. My investigation shows that there are many problems for old people to use their appliances. For example, they can't operate them, or the operating processes are too complicated; some appliances have kinds of functions but just several ones are used; some tend to be used by mistaken because of the unclear characters or symbles, which could shorten their service lives, even make them broken. The thesis analyzes the form and elements of man-machine interface firstly.Secondly, interprets old people's physiological characteristics and the effects on the interface design produced by them;Thirdly, explores their cognitive and mental characteristics including the perceptions, memories, thoughts, intelligence and learning and the effects produced by them as well.On the basis of all above, the thesis summarizes principles and methods- the aged centered design; making processes simple; concept model matching with the custom model; creating easy operating system. At last, an ideal form of interface for old people using would be produced, that is the concept of multimedia remote controller.
