Jane Austen, British novelist, wrote six classical, worldwide popular novels.. In writing the novels, Austen limits her subject matter in love & marriages of gentlemen and ladies of the mid-upper class. She summarizes marriage patterns and put forward a picture of what an ideal marriage should be like. The study of the paper is concentrated on Austen's insights into and views of love & marriages. The study is conducted in two aspects, namely, the positive and the negative.Austen is well conscious of the class society and male-dominated conventions of her day and materializes their influences in her writings. Through heroines in her novels, we can see Austen's discontent with gender-role difference and her struggle for equality. On the other hand, she demonstrates what qualities make a creditable marriage, such as love foundation, rationality, education background, etc. There are also limitations and constraints in Austen's views on love & marriages. Austen overemphasizes economic concerns for two individuals in their marriage decisions. In addition, marriages in her novels, without exception, are formed on matched family status. Besides, due to women's inferior status in Austen's times, she fails to find any career for heroines in her works.
