John Updike(1932-2009)was modern literature master in America, who shares the title of novelist, poet, dramatist, essayist and critics."Sex,Religion and Art" is Updike' s lifetime goal for writing,"American,Christian,Town and Bourgeois" is the creational theme that Updike was proficient at,no surprising that,he became the master of describing the soul of bourgeois.Post-colonial feminism started from 80s and 90s in the twentieth century, which provided a new way of illustrating and criticizing the novel Brazil, which was a feminist text under the post-colonial culture.Admitting that patriarchy is an important factor of women oppressing,post-colonial feminism as well took the question of gender for granted, and put gender into the relationship of different races and the relationship between the colonist and the colonized, and the goal of which was to reflect the situation of all women, especially those women under the oppression.Post-colonial feminists preached that women should fight against all kinds of oppression of patriarchy, fight for human rights, equality and possibility of avoid discrimination. The paper is based on the theory of post-colonial feminism, and has undertaken a deep analysis of the protagonists and the colonized environment they lived, including five parts. The first chapter will briefly introduce the master John Updike, his position in literature,post-colonial feminism and the cultural background of Brazil. The second and third chapter will explore the physical and psychological oppression on women from gender discrimination of patriarchy and the trauma to people brought by the racial discrimination through the analyzing the reason and result of color transformation and mind change from white to black of the female protagonist. The fourth chapter will analyze the contribution to antiracism and antisexist of the female protagonist Isabel. Although this individual rebellion brought her into abyss of self-destruction,she could not escape from the gender bondage in the system of patriarchy;even she dropped to be slavery of love.It was her sacrifice that let we see the light of racial integration and woman liberation. The fifth chapter serves as a conclusion that racial discrimination brought the black the severe disaster, gender discrimination brought women physical and psychological oppression and those two social problems that caused the love tragedy of Isabel and Tristao in the novel Brazil, who represented all black and white. The creation of this paper is that it focuses on the female protagonist's choice and change from white to black, who is the new representative of the new white female. Changing from black to white is popular in traditional black literature, but the opposite is rare and which is the creation of John Updike. It is this point that grants this paper the opportunity to make creation.Hopefully, the paper could bring vitality to the study of feminism, open the mind and try best to contribute to the elimination of the racial discrimination and gender discrimination.
