Realism in oil painting has entered and taken firm root in China. It has also seen the changing ages of China. In its gradual development it has walked a long and winding path. However, under the assault from Western modernist trends and a commodity driven society, Chinese realism has for a moment lost its spiritual direction .ChaoGe and MaoYan use a kind of classical realism and expressionism combined method to reveal the spiritual world of the modern person. This has created an original style containing the characteristics of neo-realism. Therefore they have opened a new chapter for Chinese realist oil painting.There are many appraisals of ChaoGe and MaoYan, however critical essays that take the two of them and use a method of comparison are not commonly found.This essay looks at the common aspects of these two artists' works against their social and cultural backdrop as well as in the context of the emergence of "neo-realism", its structure is as follows:1. The first section looks at ChaoGe and MaoYan , their respectiveexperiences , the social background to their painting, influences etc...2.
