The Origin And The Artistic Feature Of Suzhou Brick Engraving

Suzhou brick engraving is the typical modal of the brick engraving in southern Yangzi area. Ming and Qing Dynasties witnessed the prosperous development of Suzhou brick engraving, and it reached its peak in Jiajin Era of Qing Dynasty. Starting with analyzing the social background of Suzhou brick engraving, this paper is to study the subject, style, and artistic feature of Suzhou brick engraving in different periods of time, from its rising to decaying.Research methods of Typology and Comparison are adopted in studying the subject, as well as Folklore, and its development is divided into five periods: Rising Period, Prosperous Period, Transferring period, Declining Period, and Post-Classical Period.Elegancy, vividness and refinement are artistic features of Suzhou brick engraving, meanwhile, also the chief reflection of human culture in this region, as well as the reflection of general aesthetic judgment and life style of Suzhou. Patterns and subjects of Suzhou brick engraving are vivid materials of Ming-Qing decoration patterns.
