Narrative text comprehension deals with many social and cognitive aspects. In this thesis the author only focuses on the cognitive process at discourse level in narrative text comprehension, especially evaluate the effect of schemata theory in narrative text comprehension. Schemata traditionally in psycholinguistics have two levels: content and formal. Later Oiler (1995) adds another one: abstract schemata that are related to the text structure at the sign level. Reading stories we usually get the information of facts, situation and discourse type from these three levels respectively.Basically text comprehension is concerned with the integration of new information from the text and old information from the reader's mind. The reader's background knowledge also plays an important role in comprehension. He has to make inferences and have new schemata activated in order to comprehend the text. In this way the schemata help him select the information and predict the following plot. Accordingly the comprehension progresses throughout the text. On the other hand story schemata at discourse level also have an important effect on English teaching and lealhing.
