With the development of discourse analysis, genre analysis has become a hot topic in linguistics. Nowadays, research into genre has shifted from description of discourse on the surface level to interpretation of macrostructure and communicative functions on the deep level. However, investigating on English medical inserts from the perspective of genre has not been found. Therefore, applying genre analysis to EMIs is meaningful in this field. It will not only extend the scope of genre analysis, but also help medical professionals and students as well as patients to have a full understanding of EMIs, and meanwhile shed light on Chinese medicine manufacturers in the composition of more valid EMIs for export medicines, thus embodying great academic and practical significance.Different paradigms have been applied to the exploration of genre analysis. Scholars in new rhetoric studies take social context and social purposes more into account and give genre a central place. For systemic functional approach to genre analysis, it is Hasan (1978) who pioneers the study of oral genre. She proposes the GSP model to describe the total range of text structures available within a genre.
