The study is undertaken to improve the present vocabulary teaching in the Chinese college English classes, thus finding out a more effective way to teach vocabulary to the college English learners. The major research question to be addressed in this thesis is: what are the necessary and important components in the whole vocabulary teaching process? After conducting a library and classroom research, this major research question is addressed in this thesis. The whole vocabulary teaching process can be summarized as a four-E-and-one-R instruction procedure, namely, 1)Expose to the new words; 2)Explain the words' meaning; 3)Elaborate the lexical knowledge; 4)Encourage output practice; and 5)Review the learned words. Issues concerning the implementation of this proposed vocabulary instruction procedure are carefully examined.The writer has tried to put the four-E-and-one-R vocabulary instruction procedure into teaching practice. During the three-month practice, a noticeable improvement in vocabulary instruction has been witnessed.
