This research presents teachers' beliefs and roles with regard to learner autonomy. It provides an interpretation of teachers' understanding of the related concepts of learner autonomy. Finally it identifies factors that enhance or hinder successful language learning. Both qualitative and quantitative instruments were used to elicit data that gave insight into teachers' perceptions of the issues under review. Autonomous language learning was evaluated positively by the teachers, both as a means to learn English and as a means to develop independent learning skills. The study identified a number of factors that contributed to these perceptions. It revealed that teachers' roles in fostering students' learner autonomy are more important than before. They should perform various functions in this process. Finally some recommendations were made for teacher autonomy as well as for further research.
