With the rapid development of modern information technology and the great advocation of lifelong studies, the idea to lay more emphasis on and further improve students' learner autonomy has been well accepted by researchers and teachers at home and abroad. It completely corresponds with the objectives set by the newly issued College English Curriculum Requirements-one of the objectives of the reform of the teaching model is to promote the development of individualized study methods and the autonomous learning ability on the part of students. The computer- and Web-based College English autonomous learning model is to help students achieve the learning purposes, which places a premium on teachers' individualized teaching and students' independent learning. With the help of the computer and Internet, students' comprehensive ability to use English can be greatly promoted and the best effects of study obtained. Many experts and teachers believe that teacher autonomy is the presupposition of learner autonomy and they have a close relationship with each other. The autonomous teachers should reconsider their new roles in fostering students' autonomy. To understand the current changes in teachers' teaching philosophy and practice,to see whether teachers' actual behaviors match their beliefs in their roles and, to study some influential factors about teacher autonomy in the practical College English teaching, the author has,in this thesis, conducted a case study in Beijing Jiaotong University. The study involves 231 non-English major sophomores and 42 College English teachers.Nearly 5000 data are collected through class observation and questionnaires. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses are used in the research procedure. The study shows that most teachers in Beijing Jiaotong University understand the "Curriculum Requirements" well and that they are now actively applying the new teaching approaches in their classrooms. The findings also suggest that there are discrepancies between teachers' actual teaching performance and their ideas about teachers' roles. Therefore, the author explores some factors that cause the differences and tries to come up with several teaching proposals.
