| Anaphora resolution is one of the most challenging tasks in language understanding inthe way that the relationship between the antecedent and the referential pronoun varies fromsentence to sentence. Various approaches, functional, pragmatic or cognitive, have beenapplied to demonstrate the implications and features of anaphora. This paper is intended todiscuss the anaphoric usage of person deixis from a cognitive standpoint, aiming at theuniversality and the diversity of the theories proposed by cognitive linguists. The discussionis limited to the anaphoric usage of person deixis at sentence and discourse level, from whichsome characteristics of the anaphoric usage of person deixis in English and Chinese aresummarized.
