Balthus, one of the most important painters in the 20th century, whose works remain the style of traditional concrete image and blend the Oriental and Western tradition into a integrated whole, therefore conveying the spirit through image and expressing the state of inner heart by means of reality, so he invented a mysterious world which is both independent from the West and has the poetic color of Oriental painting. With regard to his creation, a lot of controversy has been aroused and his works is typical of the Western painting world. What is most important, he promoted the precarious concrete image art to a new high level, moreover, a little is known to him, so it is worth studying him and his works. Showing great interest in this topic, the author tries to study the mystery of his concrete image painting through literature review.Beginning with the painting works by Balthus, this paper attempts to discuss from historicah realistic factors and works analysis, holding that his painting art has the following two aspects of essential core: 1) with the fluctuation of diverse schools of thoughts in the 20th century painting field of West, Balthus is a traditional devotee, by means of a secrete and unusual method of realism, he discloses the inner world and activity of people; 2) for Oriental art, especially the traditional Chinese culture, Balthus not only admires it but also has his own comprehension to it. In addition, he integrates some expressive factors and philosophy in Chinese painting with his creation, enriching greatly the expressiveness and techniques of concrete image art. The understanding of Balthus' spirit involves his consistence with a new kind of technique of expression, that is, a rational reflection on the painting art influenced by the factors of traditional and reality, the West and the East. This paper will identify this spirit through his works. The identification and drawing experience from other culture under the situation of world art nowadays appear more and more prominent. For Balthus, the difficulty of understanding his works lies in the double concept of intensive and extensive artistic surrounding and the particular epoch, and the comparison which is caused by him between China and West, which is also the original understanding different from the previous studies, arguing that only through artistic learning from others can it develop and the we should adopt a reasonable attitude towards it. In sum, the author thinks this study, on theone hand, may learn about Balthus from the context of the world over, on the other hand, through studying on Balthus can we know about the situation of the world art, which is of great significance.
