American Sinology in 20,h century underwent a process of transformation from traditional Sinology to modern Chinese Studies. Derk Bodde was the participator and witness of this process. This thesis puts the study on Derk Bodde under the extensive backgrounds of the American Sinology in 20_th century. By comparing his research with that of Joseph Needham, H.H.Dubs, Li Fu Qing and other sinologists , the thesis aims to show the unique characteristics and significance of his research on Sinology.This thesis consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 discusses Bodde's academic life , his predestined relationship with China, as well as his attitudes and views towards Chinese culture. Chapter 2 and chapter 3 study his research on Chinese Language and Character & Chinese Myths respectively. By viewing Bodde's research on Sinology as a clue to look into the basic development tendency of American Sinology in 20_th century, this thesis aims to find a mirror by which we can examine our culture and to offer a constructive academic angle for our contemporary culture construction.
