Along with the multi-polarization of politics, the globalization of economy andthe internationalization of information, the whole world becomes a "global village".Now that China has entered WTO and opened its door wider than ever to the outsideworld, more and more foreign companies are coming into China. It is important forChina to establish business relations with foreign companies to promote its economy.International business relations have expanded international communication in whichbusiness English (BE) plays a major role since most of the businesses in the world arecarried out in English language. It appears that to master BE is important to China'seconomic development and to develop our students'communicative competence inBE naturally becomes a major part of foreign language teaching. Therefore, in orderto be really communicative, students of BE should build a solid foundation ofknowledge and use of BE. They should know well about the characteristics of BE, itsdiction, syntax, and its pragmatic use.This thesis starts from the following questions: what are these words and whatare they like in BE? What is the difference between BE vocabulary and that of otherstyles of English, for instance, general English (GE)? Is there any special feature ofBE words between BE letters and BE contracts? How should teachers do in reactionto these properties of BE in the instruction of BE to students? In order to conduct adata-based study, the author builds a corpus of 60 English letters and contractsrespectively,and presents an analytical study of the language features of BE at lexical,syntactic, and discourse levels. It is hoped that through the detailed survey of businessletters and contracts, similarities and differences can be found out and possibleaccounts will be given in the light of the meaning and function of language.BE is a special type of English language in that it has its own way of diction onthe basis of its characteristic vocabulary.
